Amazon: When Momentum Fades and Risk Takes Control
2/13/20251 min read

Amazon was trading around $240 within a well-defined uptrend, marked by consistently higher highs and higher lows. The market had been rewarding continuation, and price had respected the bullish structure for an extended period.
However, after multiple impulsive moves to the upside, the last high started to show clear signs of weakness. Momentum was fading, and upside follow-through became increasingly limited — a classic signal that buyers were losing control.
Shortly after this loss of momentum, Amazon faced thousands of legal claims, adding significant uncertainty and risk to the fundamental outlook. At that point, the risk-reward profile shifted: instead of continuing to follow the trend, the scenario favored protecting gains and positioning against the move.
Following this shift in momentum and sentiment, Amazon declined by more than 23%. The short-side scenario played out over 51 days, showing how trend exhaustion combined with fundamental pressure can lead to sharp market re-pricing.
This example illustrates the importance of not marrying a trend. When price structure weakens and external risk increases, the priority is no longer continuation, but reassessment and capital protection.
